Who will win the 2012 Republican nomination?

What if we said it would be Ron Paul? Would you think we were crazy? Before you answer that, take a look at our user activity.

We didn’t set out to answer this question, so this is in no way scientific. We’ve just been encouraging people to talk about their candidates as part of supporting people’s passions.

Yet the results are striking. Just click on each candidate to see the difference in activity on each page:

Ron Paul

Newt Gingrich

Mitt Romney

It’s immediately clear that Ron Paul supporters are way more passionate about their candidate than Newt Gingrich or Mitt Romney supporters are of theirs. The Ron Paul page has 90 conversations. To show their support, some people have even changed their avatars to Ron Paul images. Compare that to Newt’s page with 4 conversations, and Mitt’s page with no conversations as of today.

You could argue that Ron Paul’s supporters are simply more passionate, but not necessarily higher in number. Good point. In fact there are many good points you could make about why our page activity isn’t predictive. Still, the contrast is so clear that it makes you wonder if Ron Paul really will be the next Republican nominee. We won’t know until we know, but it’s fun to wonder whether our crowd of users is right in this case.

Flavors: Funny Habits

You know that thing that you do that’s a bit odd?  Isn’t it awesome when you find others who do the same odd thing?  Facebook is full of pages dedicated to these oddities which proves that you’re not alone and maybe your oddities aren’t so odd after all.  Share yours in comments.

Over 100,000 Facebook users have gone to Target to buy shampoo, and spent $150.  Perhaps fans of this page should start a support group to Target and NOT spend $150 strategies. One idea: pretend like you have only 3 minutes to go in, find your shampoo and get out.  Otherwise the world will implode and kittens will perish.

Flavors: Relationship Truths

Love and relationships dominate a lot of Facebook status updates and, not surprisingly, fan pages.  We’ve dedicated this week’s flavors to “relationship truths” – let us know what your relationship truths (and falsehoods) in the comments.

Truth 1:  Being in a relationship where you can act silly together

This page has nearly 600,000 fans and has one fantastic image:  two monkey-like animals jumping together (we’re coders and marketers, not zoologists).  The best part?  Tagging is open so you could tag yourself and your partner in silliness.  Awww-inducing, right?  We were curious about the image and used Tineye.com to trace the photo.  The result?  These monkey-like animals are in fact lemurs (and not related to monkeys) and that this photo actually depicts a lemur carrying its baby.  After all, familial relationships are still relationships.

Flavors: Not being on fire and some lessons in grammar

It’s been only a few weeks since our official launch and we’ve already found plenty of interesting flavors. Some make us laugh, others make us go “hmm”, but mostly, they make us click on the “like” button.

Established in 2009, “Not being on fire” has more than 1.2 MILLION Facebook fans. Aside from the obvious fact that, not being on fire is probably a good thing, we’re not sure how this page attracted so many fans other than the fact that it rings true & is funny.

New member tile and other improvements

As result of user testing as well as great feedback from our members, I’m happy to announce some new site improvements that we released today. Here are some common problems people were having:

  1. Seeing what flavors they have in common with another member
  2. Seeing their profile page

Did you have the same problems? This screenshot shows the new changes and how they address these issues.

The main improvement is a new member tile that:

  • Has a prominent flavors-in-common button. Clicking that will show what two members have in common.
  • Shows the total number of flavors a member likes. Clicking this goes to that member’s profile.
  • Indicates whether you’re already following the member.
  • Is smaller, allowing more tiles to be viewed at once.

I hope you like the new changes. Please let us know if you do and if you have other suggestions.

What’s your flavor?

Welcome to the Socialflavor blog. It’s a big day for us, and we are glad that you stopped by.

We created Socialflavor to celebrate your flavors, the things that you like, and to help you connect with others who share your flavors. Do you ever feel like you’re inundated with information? It seems like everyone is trying to connect…for a reason. Yet, when you really get down to it, how well do you actually know the people you’re connected to online? You might know what they look like, what their ideal date is, or their work experience; but what about the things they like? It’s basic, but we seem to gloss over these interests when forging online relationships.

We want to make it simple to find others who like the same things you do because there’s a spark that happens when you do. It’s the moment of “Oh cool, me too!” We think there’s something magical about these moments because who knows where they can lead? So show us your flavors, and we’ll help you find people who share them.

We’d love your feedback so drop us a note on Facebook.

Enjoy,
Helen
